Espresso Shot Timer
Start the timer when your pump starts, watch the target window, and stop when your espresso reaches the yield you want.
Target: 25–30 seconds. Start timing when the pump starts.

Recipe note: 18g in → 36g out is a 1:2 ratio. Use the time as a guide, then adjust by taste.
How to use this espresso timer
- Weigh your dose, distribute, tamp, and lock in the portafilter.
- Start the timer when the pump starts or the lever lifts.
- Mark first drip if you want to track puck prep and pre-infusion behavior.
- Stop the timer when your scale reaches the target yield.
- Taste the shot and adjust grind finer, coarser, or yield next time.
Espresso shot timer FAQ
Is 25 to 30 seconds always the right espresso time?
No. It is a useful starting window, not a rule carved into the coffee cave wall. Roast level, basket size, grinder, machine pressure, and taste all matter.
Do I time from pump start or first drip?
Most home recipes time from pump start because it is easy and consistent. If you prefer first drip timing, use the marker button and compare shots the same way each time.
What if my shot runs too fast?
If the shot finishes far too quickly and tastes sour or thin, try grinding finer, checking distribution, or increasing dose slightly if your basket allows it.
What if my shot runs too slow?
If the shot chokes, drips slowly, or tastes harsh, try grinding coarser or reducing the dose a little. Change one variable at a time.
